Glossary of Golfing Terms - I
This page of our glossary of golfing terms is for golfing terms which begin with the letter 'I'.
- Identify - A player must always be able to identify his ball. The brand name and a number are not sufficient and a personal mark should be added.
- Impact - The time the clubface is in contact with the ball or the moment it meets it.
- In contention - A golfer is said to be in contention in a strokeplay event when he is one of the group that has a chance of winning. The term is not usually used until after the second round or later.
- In play - A ball is in play from the moment it is struck on the teeing ground until it is holed out.
- Inside to out - A swing where the club is swung back inside the line of flight to the target and is travelling outwards at the point of impact. If the clubface is square, a draw or hook results.
- Interlocking grip - A grip where the hands are bonded together by wrappping forefinger and little finger round each other.
- Irons - Clubs which have metal heads, usually of steel, and varying amounts of loft.
