Glossary of Golfing Terms - KThis page of our glossary of golfing terms is for golfing terms which begin with the letter 'K'.
- Kempshall - An early type of wound ball made with rubber tape instead of rubber thread. It rivalled the Haskell ball.
- Knock-out competition - A competition, usually matchplay, where the loser, or losing team in a round, does not live to fight another day.
- Knuckles - The merits of the one-, two- and three-knuckle grip have often been argued. When the player looks down at his left-hand grip while in the address position, he will usually see one of these numbers. The one-knuckle position is often called weak and the three-knuckle strong, though in fact only a strong player can use the one-knuckle grip and weaker players tend to use a grip with three knuckles visible.
- Kolbe, kolf, kolven, kolve - An earlier form of golf in Holland has been traced back as far as 1296, but it was often played over short distances with a stake rather than a hole as the target on ice. Golf developed on Scottish linksland, but the name golf came from the Continent where it meant 'club', while 'put' meant 'hole'.
