Glossary of Golfing Terms - UThis page of our glossary of golfing terms is for golfing terms which begin with the letter 'U'.
- Under par - A player is under par when, either during a round or at the end of it, his total score is less than the par for the holes played.
- Unplayable - A player may choose to declare that a ball is unplayable, take a penalty stroke and drop the ball no nearer the hole. A ball that is unplayable in a bunker has to be dropped in the bunker or stroke and distance taken.
- Up and down - Taking only two more shots to hole out when a player has missed a green.
- Uphill lie - The term used when a ball is positioned on ground which slopes up in front of the player.
- Upright stance - To stand comparatively erect in the address position.
- Upright swing - The club is swung up rather than round, almost to the vertical.
- Utility shots - The playing of strokes far different from the normal golf swing such as from unusual stances in bunkers or on slopes, from under bushes.
