Path = Home : The U.S. Open Golf Championship The U.S. Open Golf ChampionshipThe U.S. Open Golf Championship takes place each year in mid-June, and it is always scheduled so that the final round is wil be played on the third Sunday of the month (Father's Day). It is run by the United States Golf Association (USGA). The U.S. Open is a stroke play competition and has an 18-hole playoff. On October 4, 1895 the first U.S. Open Championship was played at the Newport Country Club, Newport, Rhode Island. It was a 36-hole competition on a nine-hole course and was played in just one day (only ten golfers took part). The winner was Horace Rawlins of England. In the early days the Championship was always won by Scottish or English golfers. However, after a few years the American golfers started winning and now is unusual for a non-American golfer to win the Championship. Tiger Woods of the USA won the 2008 Open at the Torrey Pines Golf Course, South Course, La Jolla, California. The 2009 United States Open Championship will be played at the Bethpage State Park, Black Course, Farmingdale, New York from June 18 to 21. Winners of the U.S Open Golf Championship
